As the commander-in-chief of the Roman army, Caesar Augustus carries a consular baton while proclaiming triumph to his troops. Sculpted in bonded natural marble to portray Augustus as a worthy leader, the unknown artist depicted him barefoot (for honesty) and with Cupid by his side (for pureness of heart).
